Thrifty!

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

I picked up the larger size of the Franco Albini ottoman recently and looooooovveee it. Found while at Modern Spaces in Cathedral City and of course had to grab it when I realized the price was only $48 and the tag said wicker ottoman. Seems that someone had painted it at some point and there is one piece missing, but in this house we just turn that side towards the wall and call it a day.

My lovely lady lumps.

In other dog related news, Bowie received a more appropriately sized cast after the oversize one just sort of fell off.

Coffee Table

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Coffee table switching has now effectively slid into the madness zone.

It was only what? A month ago? That I switched yet again for what is now probably the tenth time? Problem with glass top tables (if you use them all the time) is that they get fingerprints and crumbs and water rings and look like slovenly frat boy lives in your house in a matter of a few days. So what? I’m lazy and I got a little tired of wiping it off constantly.

I know this new Craigslist burly slab coffee table will probably get a mixed reaction – but you may already know how I feel about burl. I love it. I marry it. I have it’s burly babies.

If you missed it, I might have twittered about this bad boy when I got it. Yeah, I twitter. What’s the big deal? Wanna fight about it? This is getting irrationally confrontational.

It must be that I’m feeling a bit defensive about this coffee table thing, because I know how crazy-town it is. But guess what? All those reject coffee tables…they are just sitting in my garage…looking to be resold…

This puppy likes it and if a puppy likes something – argument is over. Puppy love trumps all rational or logical rebuttals about the 70’s or poo or lacquer through the power of adorableness.

It’s big. It’s chunky. It’s dark. It’s shiny. It’s indestructible. It’s organic vs. modern. I am into that.

Well, at least for the next month.

Estate!

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Maybe you caught me on twitter (twittering? uggggh) talking in 140 characters or less about a local Hemet estate sale I visited. Oh yeah, and if you want to hear about lame stuff like what I find in thrift stores or the puppy or other crap no one could be interested in you can follow along via @The_Brick_House. I warned you. It’s drivel.

While at the estate sale on Friday I saw a few interesting things, but the pricing was a little wacky. The coffee table above was $85 (plus a bunch of free spiderwebs for your trouble) while this sofa below was $50 (and unfortunately already sold).

Needless to say I left on Friday empty handed. But…

Saturday was 1/2 off day. Since the sale was only about a mile from my house I went back about a half hour before they closed up to check out what was left.

Well, obviously the coffee table was left and marked down 50%, but I wanted it cheaper. CHEAPER! Want to know my big secretly lazy trick for thrifty estate deals? I already said it. GO AT THE END. At that point they really are just giving that crap away. You risk missing out, but you gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold them, know when to walk away and know when to run.

Yeah, that just happened.

So, I offered $20. SOLD.

I know you get the idea of what the table looks like, but this is the only picture I could get of the two dogs even remotely together. Poor Iggy is still TERRIFIED of the new puppy and will run away when approached.

I also grabbed a gigantor white ceramic lamp while I was there.

The hulk sized lamp is living in the living room for now. I’m not sure what to do with it, that thing is MASSIVE.

BTW, I know the coffee table switching thing is out of control. I have four in the garage right now and this is a problem I need to address. Obviously, I am addicted to deals! At least its not crack.
