Slat Screen Finished

The slat screen is about 90% done. I took some pics while the sun was setting and the color seems to appear a little more yellow than it normally does especially compared with the pre-sealing color.

A few small finishing touches, a little sanding, a little more oil and we will be set to move on and start painting the rest of the exterior. We used Penofin Brazilian rosewood oil (an idea gleaned from this redwood deck) to seal and protect the wood from graying and the elements. The redwood does get a lot of protection from the overhang, but we really want to make sure this installation lasts. It’s been working wonders on the late afternoon heat in the living room.

We finally decided to use Amazon Paint in Whipped White (WHIP) in a satin finish. Well I think…we still have to check it out in person.

House Visit

While in San Diego for Mod Swap the fabulous folks from Le Boeuf invited us to come over and check out their modern remodel.

OMG.

This place has had a full blown transformation in a few short months with a number of projects still in the works. It is incredibly well edited, thoughtful and uses thrifty tricks and finishes to pull together a pad that screams high end while making use of a lot of DIY. They make the most of this 850 sq. ft cube of modern, highlighting amazing views and a great exterior entertaining space – which in beach side SD it must be a city ordinance that you are just required to take advantage of and enjoy.

Of course I love their Lindsey Adelman You Make It chandelier and that gorgeous dining table? Just another project they tackled themselves. Love it. Oh, and those floors? They are the exact same vintage white oak hardwood floors that we have here at TBH, but the whitewashed matte finish was stunning and makes me Hulk angry at my yellow bastard of a floor.

They were incredibly gracious, showed us around and answered all my questions about those nitty gritty construction details I’m always curious about while letting me snap snap snap away with the camera. Justin is like the sourcing king of dent and ding, ebay, ikea, craigslist, remnants and returns – if someones got what he needs he will find it for a deal.

Plastolux did a great post about the project (with lots of before and after pictures) in which Justin addresses the issues faced during the remodel process.

Mod Swap

The Boy and I headed out to San Diego on Sunday to check out Mod Swap (which he called “Mop Swap” during the entire hour and a half ride there). I’ve been rocking a super nasty cold and have since decided it was a terrible idea to venture out even though *at the time* I convinced myself I’d be fine. Now it’s a million times worse. Stupid failing body.

I know a certain someone got this round Eames Aluminum Group coffee table I had my eye on for a little bit, and a certain someone else (with those fancy leather boots) took home a nice black Bertoia diamond chair.

I loved this brass multi-tiered thing and from a distance thought it was a chandelier and couldn’t be more delighted. Unfortunately it was just a stand (plant maybe?) so the event turned out to be a bit of a bust for me. I did bring home two Eames bases for $20 for a couple of side shell chairs I’ve been working on. I still need to test them and fix them up a bit to see if they will fly for the kitchen bar area.

These were the standout Kings of Chairs at the event. The one with the ottoman was about $700 (so therefore unattainable) and the other was sold. Poop.
