This is an ode, an ode to the things we left behind…because our rental car was a Chevy Impala and was not good for transporting sofas.
Not everyone’s cup of tea, but that upholstery was in PERFECT condition and the base was amazing, but weirdly, it was also on wheels. Take the wheels off and you have this incredibly perfect vintage sofa with so much style and flair that your boring room is suddenly made resplendent. I loved this thing, even if it is all brown town.
This is like my chesterfield sofa, you know, if it had been a long time drug user and was down on its luck and eating way to much sodium. It needed a little love to get cleaned up, get it off the streets and reintegrated it into society. Ok, maybe a lot of love.
This is the one that got away. I know you’re thinking, “Morgan, girl, you are crazy. Look at that crazy floral fugly mess happening all over that sofa.”
Yeah? Huh? What?
BOOM. This thing was $55. Fifty Five Dollars. FIFTY FIVE DOLLARS.
I was dying. Dying to take it home, but every which way we tried to swing it, we just couldn’t get it back to California. All I could think was that reupholstery doesn’t cost a whole lot for something this simple and the frame is in perfect shape. And it’s fifty. five. dollars.
Have you guys been watching Secrets From a Stylist with Emily on the HGTV? Guess what – this same sofa was in the most recent episode with that couples loft. I know! Crazy right? What a weirdo coincidence. As soon as I saw it on her show I got all pissed again that we had to leave it in Arizona. Next time I bring a van. Next time I will not fail.
Then I saw a coffee table that was cute and some man sized geode things…
…and rows and rows of turquoise…and got yelled at for taking pictures and had to get all sneaky with my iPhone…
…and more rock things…
…and all kinds of petrified wood.
Have you been to Quartzsite, AZ? That place is insane. A little scary…and totally insane.
Ugh, still beating myself up for not renting a van or something, but those things are annoyingly expensive. Next time, oh you silly willy next time, I need to bite the bullet and just come up with a better plan. I miss you sofas…

Oh the one that got away. Man what a cool one. But like you need another sofa. I think I’d be to low for your rooms anyways. Just my opinion. Cool geods and rocks.
There is no such thing as too many sofas in my crazy backwards vintage hoarding book.
55$ is insane. I love it and need it in my life! In my mind I have already begun redecorating my living room and dreaming about going to AZ.
The $55 is crazy. Yes the coffee table was cute, but those rocks and the petrified wood MAN!!!
All those rocks and minerals and man-sized ‘odes. I want lots of that but it’s not here in FL. So now I know I need to go to AZ. With a truck.
boom ping ping, $55 bucks is sofa king crazy. The one emily did was pretty dope. that thing needs to be nurtured and returned back into the wild asap!
Both those sofas are awesome! Even with the wheels!
Love that bird pillow on the brown sofa too.
And all that turquoise?! Heaven.
I am so moving out west, where the wild sofas flourish and the turquoise grows on racks!
p.s.
$55. My heart yearns.
Hmmm…interesting problem you have – I know that if I visit other states, I would be tempted to come home with bigger pieces of furniture, especially thrift stores and Craiglist in DC are so much higher. I bought a coffee table off an Ebayer from FL and the delivery man charged me $100 right to my doorstep. He was making his way from FL to NY and had stops all along the way and I thought it would be handy to have his contact number! I love that $55 couch, I noticed it at Emily Henderson’s blog too!
SO AMAZING.
holy mackerel! what a bummertown. and speaking of getting yelled at for taking photos, one time i was filming a segment for my blog and the manager guy almost knocked me over trying to stop me. sheesh.
Where was this thrift haven? Was it all in Quartzsite?
Heaven. I love all of the mineral specimens. What is the name of this place? I feel a road trip coming on.
Where was this amazing place?
have you talked to someone yet about your sofa obsession? oh boy, you’ve got it bad.
WOW. I never thought I’d see the day that Quartzite was referred to anything but the “armpit on the way to CA”. Classic~ Yep, thats one of the gems of living here. Lotsa very cool natural stuff and lotsa very cool retired folk that bought amazing things back in the day. Shopping and decorating here can be all kinds of awesome.
I’m mad at you for not getting that $55 sofa. I saw it on SFAS and am jealous. I also kind of like the blue floral… am I crazy?
Oh my gosh that place is so amazing! I will take two of those sofa’s and about a hundred turquoise bead strands. Too bad you could transport some of those sofa’s!
WHERE was that floral couch!!!!????? PLEASE!??
ouch ouch ouch. IT HURTS. $55???????????????
I immediately thought, “Woah, that exact same sofa was just on Secrets From a Stylist!” That’s pretty wild.
Wow…. You weren’t kidding. $55 for that sofa. I’m drooling.
Shitballs! sorry for the swear but its the only word for it. I can’t believe you had leave that thing behind. I wants it.
Wow, that top sofa is to die for and very similar to a vintage sleeper sofa I just picked up, brown with diamond pattern and everything!
Wow look at all that blue bling.
Thanks for risking life and limb to share the happy snaps
Maggie, encourage swearing.
Still sad to have left it behind.
Air, I need air!
55 USD that’s, that’s, why, that’s less than 40 EUR. I’ll get on an airoplane right now!
Tickets, you say, delivery, you say, upholstery, you say. Agh! Curse you, voice of foolish reasoning residing in my head. Curse you, I say!
Ok so the crazy patterned couch…I may have had to take that home with me!
again. all of those rad hippie stones. i NEED them. and they are totally blowing my mind.
Ugh, love it too. So, just to clarify — the thrift store was in Quartzite, along with the rocks? Or was it in Phoenix? We’re going to AZ in June, so I need to work this place into a stop!
Holy crap that first sofa was incredible…I would have picked that bad boy up in heart beat and then thought about where in the world I could put it after the fact. And that coffee table…I NEED it!
So happy I stumbled upon your blog from desire to inspire! Yay…I love used, vintage furniture too!
Yelled at for taking pictures? You hussy, with your free advertising and appreciation of their wares…
I saw that brown couch in Sun City the other day but where in the world did you find that blue floral couch!? I’m sure its long gone by now but I’m always looking for new places to thrift out here in the valley of the sun.
I’ll never tell.
Well, remember, I posted this like a week after I saw it. That thing is long gone. Sorry to all the folks who have been emailing…its gone…I’m tight lipped.
I love the sofa that looks like your chesterfield! And the one with the tables for arms. Is there a name for that? I really want to replace my lame ikea sofa.
My work is FILLED with man size (and larger, and smaller) “geode things”. Which is kind of weird because it’s an insurance company…but fun to look at. What I can’t figure out is why the owner of the company (he bought them all) felt inclined to leave all of the astronomical price tags on them, and why many of them have pennies in them…
holy shit. those geodes!!!!!!! also, my first thought was that the one couch was just like the one on Secrets… then i scrolled down. second thought is that probably you should have your own show. even though i know you don’t want one.
Oh – I have been looking for a Chesterfield Sofa for so long, I would have probably even grabbed that one up!
Also – that third sofa down is exactly like one that Emily Henderson used on Secrets from a Stylist – and I LOVED it! Why do I never find cool things like that
OMG!! I’m amazed!
Holy crap – I started reading your blog a week ago and made it to this one from all the way back, and you can imagine my shock when I saw the pic of this totally rad plaid sofa – I have the same damn pic in my cell phone. I was there the same day, took a picture of it and sent it to all my friends and posted it on my FB page saying “The world’s best sofa is currently for sale in Sun City.” There you go.
