Thrifty!

November 19th, 2010

I’ve been out and about at thrift stores and a few estate sales over the past couple weeks. Here’s a selection of some of the small things I’ve picked up along the way – all the bigger stuff is jammed in the garage. I did find a bunch of vintage Navajo rugs for cheap at this madhouse estate sale and had to battle a lady dealer tooth and nail for them. I also picked up some Acoma pottery as well as other random bits and pieces, including this kooky hand carved walrus. The Boy forbade me from buying more art, but I fell in love with this nutty leaf painting that seemed like a very fussy Alex Katz and broke the ban. I also grabbed a pair of what I think will be universally despised once I post about them. Let me install one and live with it for a few days and see if it works…

I’ve had that photo on the right sitting on my desktop for ages now. I took it inside Kings Highway (because I am totally obsessed with that crazy huge pencil cactus) and just thought one day I would use it to show to someone at a nursery. I spotted it while cleaning off all the crap that lands on my desktop and thought it juxtaposed well with all my thrifty loot. Ugh. Juxtapose. Damn you art school!

Hey Morgan! The rug is really cool!
Are you planning to use it or was just a compulsive purchasing? :D
I think it would fit in the bedroom…isn’t it? ;)
      Great findings, congrats.

      Doei!

I like your use of an exclamation point for your “thrifty” posts. I always imagine you (or a voice, or just somebody, since I don’t know what you look or sound like) screaming “THRIFTYYYY!!!!!!!” really loud and angry! But angry in a good way :)

So I love you. I love your thrifty scores. I love the way you write/talk/live. I love your house. I love love love you. And, I want to BE you. Creepy enough? How about this: I always wanted an Albini pouf too! And less than a week after you posted your score, I scored one off CL! $18.00!!! I’ve got a bunch of succulent planters everywhere too! And a cowhide! But just the one since my pad is 900sq.ft. And now this: that pencil cactus. I’ve loved it for a year. Only I did research and found that it’s highly poisonous and can cause severe itchy rash in many people. NOT recommended for those who tend to move things about. And especially not good for your 2 sweet 4-leggeds. Sorry for us both. How about a split-leaf phildendron? Monsteras are perhaps a tad too iconic. Still, they are GORGEOUS. Keep the posts coming. ‘Cause lest you forget: I LOVE you! ; )

Are your thrifting/estate sale trips solo missions, or does the boy partake? I’m curious because, if you are anything like me, I come home with dozens of goodies and my guy always has the ‘oh, no. here she goes again’ look on his face when he sees me.

You are such a trifting beast. I’m wondering do you have me beat? I’m thinking that I’m going to check out a few sales this weekend if it’s not too cold.

For a minute there, I thought you had scored that fabulous daybed…
I love the peinting. And the rugs !

soooooooo, whatcha think about using those rugs to upholster something?? like a bench. or a chair. or a daybed? it could totally work, especially if you had them use the rug on the exposed parts of the cushions and then just canvas/duck cloth on the other parts. it would be amazing.

      just sayin.

Ash: He hates thrifting, so its a solo deal. When I come home he always looks sad and says in a sarcastically defeated tone. “Great.” Eight years and its still not funny.

Dean – I’ve got a little project brewing, its really not as exciting as reupholstering though…

I too love the pencil, esp red ones. Yes, they are rather poisonious, dang, I cannot spell that word right. as i was saying, and they do best in a sunny spot. They are also everywhere, like in peoples yards getting gigantic while ignored. break off a big piece, let if sit 2 weeks, then plant in pot. beware the white sap-use gloves or you may get a rash. dont eat it or put it in your dogs food, everything will be fine.

    12. i LOVE that leaf painting…it reminds me of one of my favorite iconic wallpapers…you know it…probs don’t even have to say it but i will provide a link for you anyway…

I do too. its leaning by my desk right now in need of a home.

it is like that wallpaper [i knew immediately what you meant BTW ;-) ] except if it was done by an outsider artist with a stump for a hand. It’s pretty wacky.
