Reader Request

August 25th, 2010

Tough times my friends, tough times.

The Brick House is now accepting advertising. I am also now available for any freelance writing, photography work or design consultation you may need. Also, if you are in the Inland Empire and need a whip smart, design savvy and motivated employee I’d love to submit an application. I can be reached via: contact@the-brick-house.com

Any suggestions for available positions or firms to approach would be much appreciated. I will be combing the employment pages.

Thank you readers, fellow bloggers, new friends. You are my constant joy to read, exchange ideas with and be inspired by. I’m looking forward to transitioning into a new career and would be ecstatic to receive any suggestions, tips or advice.

xoxo

this is super bummer news… i’m so sorry to hear:( i think you should take inspiration from jamie meares and branch out on your own! style consultation, a little shop, a book, you could do it all! you have amazing style, are super savvy and everyone could learn from the way you can make something out of nothing (hello, front door!) from a super practical standpoint, linkedin is the shit too. keep us posted so we can support you in whatever way blogger friends can:)

    2. alex sunday on 08/25/2010:

gosh, that’s a stress. i’m with julia – maybe this is the moment you’ll look back on as when you were forced to take some risks and do something for yourself. best of luck! (and sorry i can’t offer anything practical).

    3. Cassie on 08/25/2010:

No suggestions, just comforting words. I know you’ve got a lot of skillz and will land on your feet!

    4. Dan on 08/25/2010:

You are awesome, and good things happen to awesome, talented, funny people. Everything’s gonna be alright, Morgan!

    5. Fat Cat on 08/25/2010:

Oh crap ! If it’s any consolation (it probably isn’t), I am sending you lots of good luck from the other side of the world. I very much hope things work out for you !

    6. Brismod on 08/25/2010:

If you get ads on your blog, I’ll click on them.

    7. Jules on 08/25/2010:

I was hoping those of us who live in the IE were past the bad news. I guess not. :( Since I’m local, I’ll keep my ear to the ground for opportunities in our area. If I hear of anything, I will let you know.

    8. jared on 08/25/2010:

show me the ad, I’ll click too.

    9. THE BRICK HOUSE on 08/25/2010:

You guys are lovely. I’m processing and trying to figure out the next step. I think risk taking is the answer!

    10. melissa on 08/25/2010:

Did the Boy ever get a job again after being laid off last year? It’s been tough for everybody. :(

    11. when i was in that place some years ago, it ended up opening so many new doors for me. it will for you!

will keep eyes and ears open. also, will send you an email.

    12. Kris on 08/25/2010:

Bummer. Could you maybe write for http://www.apartmenttherapy.com
I have heard they pay, or for some fab design mag, just send the link to your site, that should do it, seriously.

    13. Fiona on 08/25/2010:

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Internet hugs. I’m sure something even better will turn up. I’m with Julia, get cracking on a decorating/DIY/thrifting on a miniscule budget book, you have it half-written already… more internet hugs.

    14. AbbeyH on 08/25/2010:

That’s crappy news! I’m sorry to hear it, but know that fabulous things are sure to come your way. Best of luck!

    15. ModFruGal on 08/25/2010:

Dang! A sucky job was at least a job! I’m with Kris…I know Design Sponge was looking for a west coast copy editor…..

    16. MS on 08/25/2010:

Coming out of the shadows to tell you how bummed I am to hear this news. I have no helpful job suggestions, but if you put up ads, I will click on them like mad. Good luck…virtual hug.

      http://www.designspongeonline.com/2010/08/ds-hiring-west-coast-copy-editor.html

Design Sponge is looking for a copy editor. I love their blog as much as I do yours.

You are talented and wonderful, it will all work out!

    18. LaShaune on 08/25/2010:

I too will click away!!! As Julia Wheeler suggested, stepping out on your own would be an awesome door to open. Your blog is true testament to your strengths. You could even host classes to those of us too scared to do this stuff on our own (painting found objects, minor repairs, etc). You have a knack and strong talent that will be snatched up quickly!

    19. katie on 08/25/2010:

oh no! good luck to you, i hope things work out soon!

    20. Tania on 08/25/2010:

You are such a talent. I really hope you find a job you love in a field you love with a pay bracket you love. Good vibes to you from down under…

PS: When I looked at your title and photo… I thought the post was gonna be a reader led paint request… where you were going to play some kinda interior designer DJ fielding our requests, narrowing them down to a top ten and then choosing the winning colour for your wall… with a surprise reveal. (Boy was I wrong).

    21. Jean on 08/25/2010:

I wish I had something more helpful to offer than “good luck”–but I’m confident you’ll land in a good place.

    22. Coletta on 08/25/2010:

did you lose your art class job or are just looking to change careers?

your blog is awesome and I really look forward to each update so there is no doubt that you SHOULD have a paying career with your blog and/or something in design.

      best of luck to you.

    23. Mike on 08/25/2010:

Sorry to hear of your dilema. Having lived in I.E. for 28 yrs., all we can is that — outside of yo-yo building boom jobs — findind employment out here has always been a bleak and daunting task. Personally not keen on selling ad space but, what the hey, anything that’ll make a buck these brutal economic times is fair game, we guess.

    24. Heather Espana on 08/25/2010:

Self-employment is freaky. And the taxes suck. And you have to pay your own benefits. And when something goes wrong it’s usually your fault. And you know what? It’s the awesomest thing ever. I would never go back. Heck, I just had pizza for breakfast and booked my flight for an October wedding shoot on the other side of the country, while wearing pajamas. You could totally have your own business. You’ve got hundreds, probably thousands of people drooling over your style (myself included). Just sayin’.

    25. Nat on 08/25/2010:

You should contact all the big design blogs, they would be lucky to have you.
      And keep us posted.

    26. Wendy on 08/25/2010:

Everything you post is amazing, but the thing I’ve admired most is your photography. And as many have said, this is most likely a blessing in disguise… you’re a mega-talent and definitely going far!

    27. Lauren @ chezerbey on 08/25/2010:

Oh man…I’ve been there (architecture + recession = trouble). I know the feeling. If it’s a comfort at all, many people I know that have been in the same boat have turned it into a good experience, whether they ended up trying something completely new or going freelance or just having more time to spend with family or work on their house.

    28. S@sha on 08/25/2010:

      Hey Morgan,

Scary. I know because I got laid off from my design related job more than a year and a half ago, and still no one in my field is hiring. I’ve done some freelance and taught adjunct, but none of that pays particularly well when times are tough. Starting your own business might be the way to go. Hopefully you have some savings to get you started. Good luck! Your blog is definitely a great selling point for your potential services.

    29. Ana on 08/25/2010:

Sorry to hear this Morgan but like everyone else has said you’re super talented and you’ll find something.

Maybe selling vintage stuff in etsy? You’ve got such a great eye for that.

    30. yhbhs on 08/25/2010:

hey morgan, i agree with you. it’s about the risk taking attitude. what about a book idea based on your house? i’m sure you could sell the idea.

    31. Carol on 08/25/2010:

I’m so sorry. And after you were just working so hard. Your circumstances suck but you’re still awesome. Good luck sis.

    32. anna K on 08/25/2010:

Sorry to read that, I’m sure it’s a short break before a new & exciting adventure, you’re too talented to remain unemployed !

I’m recommending your blog to all my friends here in France, may I suggest that you create a “Brick House” page on Facebook ? It could help to increase the clicks on your sponsors…
      Best of luck to you.

    33. maya on 08/25/2010:

      love.

    34. Sarah on 08/25/2010:

Love the ad free blog but you could choose a few businesses whose product you really like and who have ads that are a good fit with your aesthetic.

I also thought of the job at design sponge — something small that could be a good gap-filler.

Best of luck, excited to hear what you do next.

    35. Nico on 08/25/2010:

      <3

      thanks for the constant inspiration.
buying a junky house in a bad neighborhood soon – and hopefully it looks half as killer as yours.

everything will start looking up soon!

    36. Angela on 08/25/2010:

Yes, if you have an ad I’ll click on it to!

From my perspective: you are brilliant, talented, creative, self motivated and an incredibly hard worker. You have no kids. I think you’re in the perfect position to risk big. I had a kids clothing line that was doing well until I had my daughter. Risk big and grow your venture while you still can. The launching of any business is the most time consuming and you have the skill and time to go for it. You don’t seem like the type to doubt your abilities so I’d say the world is your oyster! Sending you lots of positive juju!

    37. Chantel I. on 08/25/2010:

This is totally sucky news and I feel for you, Morgan. I’m not local, so I can’t offer much practical support, but if you need online support, I’m your gal. I’ll click on any ad you post, and I’ll buy anything that you make.

    38. Sarah on 08/25/2010:

You should submit your blog to try to start a column (magazine or newspaper). You are a great, easy to read, funny writer, and with the buzz that you have started here with the brick house, I think you would have a good leg up on getting one going.

    39. Elizabeth on 08/25/2010:

Good luck! When one door closes and all that…
I will clicky on ads too!

    40. Monique on 08/25/2010:

If you’re looking for some future business (brilliant) guidance, I suggest checking out Danielle LaPorte at http://whitehottruth.com
She is a bad-ass supporter of creative types.

    41. Shauntelle on 08/25/2010:

I was laid off (OK, lets be honest, fired) from my interior design job last April, and after an initial panic, I decided to go out on my own. I have never looked back, and neither should you. Your blog is a constant source of humor and inspiration and I know you’ll find a way to roll it into a paying gig.
      good luck!

    42. Alex on 08/25/2010:

Thanks for getting back to me.. hopefully we can work something out for advertising in the near future. Good luck with everything

    43. Jason |These Roving Eyes| on 08/25/2010:

I think it’s super amazing that you’d grab this by the balls and, with no ego, ask for help. Made me love you and your blog and your ideas and your vision even more. With the amount of positive energy coming your way each day, it’s gonna be all good, my e-friend. All good.

    44. Cristian on 08/25/2010:

You should write a book about the Brick house project! You have the material and pictures and write hellagood. I would buy two copies!

      Love and support from Sweden!

    45. Ana on 08/25/2010:

Morgan, I emailed you about a job lead. Good luck with everything!

    46. Marcia on 08/25/2010:

I second applying for the Design Sponge copy editor job. You’re perfect for it. Meanwhile, hang in there.

    47. hsp on 08/25/2010:

I feel your pain. Design*Sponge is looking for a West Coast copy writer….

      Good luck!

    48. hsp on 08/25/2010:

hahahaha I should have read all of the comments first….

    49. MiChelle on 08/26/2010:

DANG IT! I’ll click until my carpel tunnel renders my hand completely useless and then I’ll use my pointy nose.

    50. Ariel on 08/26/2010:

Apply for the d*s position! They are looking for somebody on the West Coast. They have such a great team, I’m sure they could connect you to more opportunities. I will click on your advertising – anyone that gives you a hard time about putting in ads is out of touch with reality. Good vibes coming your way from the East Coast!

    51. Brick and Brack on 08/26/2010:

I know you wanted your blog to be AD free but non of your readers will care! You can totally make a profit off the blog and still rock it the way your blog does. Obviously you have loyal readers, just think if you actually promoted the blog!? Look at YHL, AT, Design Sponge, etc…

    52. adam on 08/26/2010:

I love you !!! sending u Much good vibes from nola

    53. megan on 08/26/2010:

oh man. this sucks. i’m really sorry to hear your news.

your blog has the potential to be huge. you’ve got it all – original content, design, photography, style, humor… you’ll survive this and deserve every amazing opportunity that comes your way.

time to flip that brick house and start anew?

    54. tracy on 08/26/2010:

i’m a relatively new reader and you’re one of my daily reads :) i’m a fan. you rock. love your writing! wishing you the best of luck in your next step. i already know you’re going to be great :)

    55. Carls on 08/26/2010:

      Love to Morgan!

    57. Debbie on 08/26/2010:

Sorry to hear about that! Good luck! I’m with the others, go out on your own and write that book. I will buy one for def (if I can get it down here in New Zealand). These things happen for a reason and all that…

    58. modernhaus on 08/26/2010:

I feel like the window of your crappy job has shut and multiple glossy black modern doors of opportunity are opening. Without the job to hold you back. You’ve been building this virtual resume/client list/readership/design empire for a long time and now you can and should reap some benefits

It’s “your time”, as beer commercial as that sounds…

      Way to go, Idaho!

      p.s.-interested in the ad rates…

    59. diana on 08/27/2010:

the english have a great word for this: ARSE.

good luck with the transition, I’m 100% SURE you’ll be a success

    60. amy h on 08/28/2010:

I’m sorry to hear you are looking for a job — I know how freaky that can be when it first hits you. I wish I had some sort of helpful info. Best of luck to you in figuring it all out!

    61. j. rose on 08/29/2010:

Wow, sorry to hear. I know it’s scary, but you’re such a talent. No doubt someone will scoop you up!

    62. erin@designcrisis on 08/30/2010:

Damn, this is lame, I’m so sorry!

Sell text link ads — not ugly, not too big, and they pay ok.

The DS job sounds perfect for you, too.

Last, you could start up a freelance interior photography business. I think you could make a tidy sum here and there, and it would still leave time for other projects.

Best, of luck… heading over to Darth Facebook to friend your ass.
