Well crap.

June 30th, 2010

You know when you’re at a bar and you’ve been enjoying some libations and someone emails an offer to buy your sofa and you just think “Fuck it, why not”. And you know how maybe you don’t fully think through the consequences, like that you’ll need to buy another sofa and the big truck is broke down and your schedule is awful…

Maybe it’s just me.

I need a sofa now. What do we all think of this? I’m looking for something cute, taller than the last one and reasonably priced. TV watching kind of sofa, with style of course.

No more relaxing after work on the old Danish beast which is totally depressing. Speaking of, my day job schedule is completely nutty for the rest of the summer so posting and house progress is going to be S to the LOW. Yeah, I know. I’m sad too.

the sofa looks like a winner to me (and comfy), though i’m not sure i love the legs. would you go for grey? some colour might be good.

  2. Jane on June 30, 2010:

Umm, that looks very similar to your old one except grey… doesn’t it?

  3. Angela on June 30, 2010:

You’re a nut! I hope you got good cash for your couch. I can’t believe it’s that easy to get stuff out of you…..ok, so let me make note of this. Next time I see something I want I’ll be contacting you on a Friday or Saturday night! LOL!!!

  4. Martin on June 30, 2010:

Florence Knoll knock off.. Yeah, that’s actually what Im looking for.. In Red, and a two seater version

  5. tx Sarah on June 30, 2010:

    So…

How much did you get for the old couch??

  6. Sue on June 30, 2010:

That looks very close to my sofa…mine is light gray and doesn’t have the tufted pillows on the back though….I love it your choice. You are in a selling mood lately. Hey, if I send you an email…will you sell me your new kitchen light?

  7. Kate on June 30, 2010:

omg .. why did you sell it! It was such an amazing couch (so much better than the Florence knoll knock off in my opinion)
If you want to get a knoll couch. Get the early Edition Parallel Bar Sofa with teak legs! (http://www.clusterflock.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/florenceknoll57wsofa.jpg)
Hard to find but sooo worth it. I scooped one up in NYC last year.

  8. Erin on June 30, 2010:

nice couch…but not really wow (sorry) maybe it is just the legs.
…not a fan of the shiny legs. Brushed alumium (or stainless steel) would be better. But I think wood would be better for your place (?)

  9. ModFruGal on June 30, 2010:

    Time to rearrange?

  10. Tonia on June 30, 2010:

LOL, I have done the same thing. However, no suggestions, but I can’t wait to see what you get. I’m sure that it will be something fabulous

  11. Isabelle on June 30, 2010:

I say no! It’s much too usual for somone with extraordinary taste

  12. Mike on June 30, 2010:

Don’t sell any more things that need to be replaced. Getting impossible to find anything decent at a reasonable price, at least here in the Redlands area.

  13. Jean on June 30, 2010:

You are so funny! If I could replace our stupid couch, I would go back in time and get the big comfy handsome red behemoth I turned down. Yes, yes, I admit it, like one of those Pottery Barn sofas.

  14. THE BRICK HOUSE on June 30, 2010:

Although I loved the look of the old sofa, the height and comfort level wasn’t really there. The Boy complained constantly, friends complained, my back complained.

It wasn’t a great TV watching sofa (which needed to be its main function) and I had been considering getting rid of it for awhile. So when the offer popped up to sell it for $1200, we did.

I LOVE the knoll split rail, but come on. Those are like crazy $$$. I saw a great used one on CL for $1600 – but it’s still too low and too hard. I’m looking for something in like the $800 range.

Something simple, something comfy, something that can be a good backdrop to the giant burl coffee table and my guests won’t complain about tall people problems the whole time.

  15. Robyn on June 30, 2010:

For a TV watching sofa, I just dont think it will be very comfortable. I like it fine, but am not crazy about it. I am all for a grey sofa though!

  16. Angela on June 30, 2010:

PS always looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  17. Jenn on June 30, 2010:

I like the couch you link to OK overall but yeah I’d prefer that the legs were wood rather than metal, as some other folks have commented. I don’t have a higher backed solution for you but I understand the complaint. We have a similar problem right now and are looking for a solution.

  18. erin@designcrisis on June 30, 2010:

I wish someone would email me out of the blue and offer to pay a bazillion dollars for that bitch of a sofa I stupidly bought, so I say — Good work!

No more vintage sofas for me. Life is too short to lounge on hard, unforgiving furniture.

Is the sofa in your living room comfy? Could you put it in old sofa’s place and do something totally different in the living room until you can purchase new seating? Like maybe some crazy lounge chairs, or a daybed situation? I know you must still have some extra goodies laying about…

I like the one you linked to, and I like the shiny legs (although you know I’d prefer brass).

It’s know going to be awesome when you figure it out!

  19. erin@designcrisis on June 30, 2010:

oops, just pretend that last line is grammatically correct. thanks.

  20. Kris on June 30, 2010:

    Congratulations on the sell.
If that new one is comfortable, then just go for it. I used to have an old sofa that looked cool but was giving me similar problems as yours was. Sold that one and bought a brand new one that is so comfy, and I did not have to start with fumigating it like when I got the old one.
Any way, maybe if the silver bar and legs isn’t a structural thing, then you could just replace them with something more retro.
Or just spray it. Maybe if it would be in the same colour as the sofa it could look cool, or black.
Or, maybe take it to carspraying guys and get it done in brass.
    Good luck.

    We have this couch:
    http://www.intagliahome.com/sofas/antonia.html

It’s extremely comfortable, even for some of our friends/family who are in the jolly green giant height range. I lay on it and watch TV on the computer all the time, and it’s awesome. It’s not as mod and awesome as your pick, but the comfort of the high arms and high back is wonderful. I know CB2 has similar styles, and to be honest, I have no idea what ours cost new. We bought it from a friend for $500. Good luck!

  22. rick on June 30, 2010:

i’m was completely in love with jens risom high backs and can attest to their comfort. i wanted an armless 4 seater before i found my ginormous sectional at the designer’s studio sale (http://www.tedboerner.com/pdfs/upholstery_poe_sect.pdf). love me some ted boerner and buying direct made it an extravagance but not a crazy one. the back height and angle are ideal, two can fall asleep on it, and it’s retro and modern at the same time, sort of high 50’s meets today.

i’ve seen risoms go for as little as $495 on ebay, though usually something needing reupholstery or sold by someone with no idea what it is if in that range….and then you have to ship.

something like this (but a three seater in a modern weave):

    happy hunting.

Try looking at Room and Board – very comfortable options and many with a mid-century vibe. Those chrome legs will just not do with your style. Check out the Andre, Reese, Westwood sofas to name just a few. They are over your budget at about $1200, but the quality is definitely worth it. I have had problems with the comfort and quality of upholstered CB2 pieces.

  24. modernhaus on July 1, 2010:

Why not go for a reclining sofa with integrated cooler and cup holders?

  25. THE BRICK HOUSE on July 1, 2010:

    could be an option.

  26. Erin on July 1, 2010:

ya know…with your awesome blog and the tons of loyal followers you should get someone to sponser a couch for you or give it to you at cost, knowing it will be viewed by tons of folks seeing what you with your impeccable taste put in your place next. I keep seeing folks on other sites referencing your blog. Designers get discounts from manufacturers all the time…
just sayin. I would just love to see YOUR dream couch in that awesome space.

Or it could be late and I am being delusional…

  27. Kati on July 1, 2010:

Have you tried the new Ikea Karlstad sofa in leather? It has a similar look and tufted cushions. The price is good and you could add on a matching reclining chaise, too. Ikea also carries several other sofa legs so you could swap them easily if you wanted.

I haven’t tried out this new leather version yet and don’t know anyone who has it–I’ve just seen it online–but I have an older, discontinued leather sofa from Ikea and I love it! Easy to clean, gets more comfy all the time, helps with my allergies, and has clean lines.

  28. A Merry Mishap on July 1, 2010:

I like it, especially the chrome base.

  29. Coletta on July 1, 2010:

the karlstad sectional is what i wanted also..but if you don’t live close to an ikea, the shipping costs are STUPID!

you have to go in to order it. then they ship it to your home. They will not let you pick it up from the store. They were going to charge us over $300 for shipping!

  30. Keri on July 1, 2010:

Too funny! Sofa shopping is so hard, too. It took me an embarassingly long time to pick a new sofa for our living room. We went with Room & Board and have loooved the quality so far.

  31. tina aka forrestina vintage on July 1, 2010:

Doesn’t look that comfy but love the color, texture and lines of it!

  32. LibertyJB on July 1, 2010:

My husband and I just bought this couch. I love it and its pretty comfy without losing too much style. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=251414&CategoryID=42880

  33. Chad on July 1, 2010:

Would not have sold. Style over comfort any day. More importantly, “libations” should really be used more in everyone’s vocabulary.

  34. eve on July 1, 2010:

Aw Morgan! That’s the same sofa I have! (But I found it from a second-hand seller, so I would love any more info or where you are finding it now!)

Its not a ’sink into’ couch, but I love it. My favorite part is how the cushions are all attached and so there’s no sliding around and it always looks good. I also think the stitching and fabric are unique- the grey and metal fit the modern thing I’ve got going on amazing, but I imagine if you went in this direction you will quickly find yourself doing an overhaul on the whole room! (Which you may or may not want to do.) Or, maybe, you envision something that makes it all work that we don’t see yet.

I don’t know if you found the sofa online or have actually seen it, but if you have any specific questions about it you can ask me :)

  35. eve on July 1, 2010:

Just realized that mine may be ever so slightly different, because those cushions look like they are loose- but has to be the same maker- looks nearly the same.

  36. Coletta on July 3, 2010:

FYI: just spotted a burl coffee table for sale on craigslist. Here is the link if anyone is wanting one.
