Brick House Vintage

March 1st, 2010

We officially ran out of room – room in the house for furniture and room in the garage for storage. As a remedy to this overabundance of vintage I opened a consignment space!

This weekend we went over to the Beaumont Antique Mall and started packing all our leftover vintage into a small rented space. This is an experiment of sorts to see if it is more effective (and a bit easier) than Etsy. After closing my Etsy shop for a brief break I just couldn’t ever get back into the swing of posting, packing and shipping. The shipping just KILLED me and this short break has become pretty permanent.

Things started to pile up…

I kept thinking about this guys consignment booth that is nearby the house at this antique mall off the 10FWY on the way to Palm Springs. I inquired about available space and there just happened to be a spot right next to him.

I didn’t have any shelving for all my “smalls” (that’s what the ladies told me to call my accessories) even though I’ve been on the hunt for a few weeks. So, I resorted to a bit of a Home Depot ad hoc solution with small cinder blocks and a couple of 8′ long pine boards – dorm room style. We also took the lazy way out by not painting out the sad lavender wall color and bluish floor. I was thinking black floors and white walls, but seeing this as an experiment and not wanting to invest a whole lot of cash we kind of  just stuck stuff in.

We still have more to things to add, and if it goes well maybe we might pimp out the space a bit more. The whole thing made me a little depressed; I already miss my stuff like some sort of crazy hoarder!

Darn. If i didn’t live on the other side of the world I would be down there like a shot and buy it all!

love the black chair with the parrot pillow!

  3. Brismod on March 1, 2010:

Yes, hoarder disorder is of epidemic proportions, so I’ve heard. But you’ve got good stuff, so it doesn’t apply to you. Good luck with your venture.

I was just admiring your courage selling your belongings (you really want to get rid of the nature morte ?), when I read the last paragraph….
I was almost in tears last last night after having put my dining chairs on ebay… But like you, I need the space … and the cash I suppose :-)

Can I move into your consignment space? Your stuff is just gorgeous. I absolutely see why it’s hard to sell. You’re not a hoarder – just an appreciator of lovely things.
I on the other hand edit before I buy an item at the thrift store, only to go back the next day to find the lovely thing regrettably gone!

Oh man, I so heart the blue pot with the crossed handle, and the orange bowl, and the slat bench. To bad I live on the other side of the country! Good luck and congrats on paring down.

This is the kind of antique mall space that draws me in like a tractor beam. If only I lived in CA! Good luck!

  12. Sue on March 1, 2010:

I love it! Pretty soon, you’re gonna have everyone, including me, driving across many states just to buy something from you. Good luck!

Good for you! Love the rug.

  15. Jill on March 1, 2010:

Right on! I don’t know if this is a popular mall, but if it is – this could be a decent little side venture. I always enjoyed my antique mall spaces. I like the idea of painting if the owners allow it, but I agree – wait a few months and see if it’s worth the effort. Have fun!
PS. I wanna shop your space already.

everything looks great! i always get a little sad when i sell something and have to say goodbye to something i particularly love. but i keep reminding myself what my grandma and grandpa’s house looks like and that hoarding is genetic :-)

  22. THE BRICK HOUSE on March 1, 2010:

Thanks all! It’s way more colorful than I typically think is my style. And a little more kitsch. Gotta work on that.

The shelves are ghetto though right? Not like Donald Judd or Marcel Breuer? I need a shelf.

  23. Juli on March 1, 2010:

    You did it! So exciting!

  24. Pretty Gritty on March 1, 2010:

  29. Nick Klaus on March 2, 2010:

Next time I’m in Palm Springs, I know where I’m going! It’s a hard shift to make from ‘lets keep this because….’ to ‘this has to go’, but its rewarding.

  30. jamie on March 2, 2010:

  33. Caroline, No. on March 2, 2010:

You should do a live comments auction on that owl. I have friends who would love it. x

  34. Tamisha on March 2, 2010:

eh, paint the cinder block a hot color like orange and the shelves white and they’d all look deliberate.

  35. Dee on March 2, 2010:

There is so much I love here – roadrunner painting, bench, black chairs, kilim rug. Definitely coming here the next time I’m in Palm Springs to furnish our condo. Good luck with your new venture!

  36. Deborah on March 2, 2010:

I must have that daisy picture. Yes! I must!

  37. hello on March 3, 2010:

awesome shop. but the depressing walls and floor make everything look cheaper and sadder. if you can stand to, or they’ll let you, put like a coat of high gloss white deck paint on the wall and floor. then double your prices!

  38. Callista on March 3, 2010:

Oh my goodness. I want those yellow lamps!

  39. pianoarthur on March 4, 2010:

That lady in the painting is nekkid? I thought that she was wearing a tight fitting light leotard! Honest!

  40. renee anne on March 4, 2010:

    ditto “uglygirl”

I don’t care about the ugly walls and floors. this shit looks AMAZING!

  41. renee anne on March 4, 2010:

and by shit, I most certainly do not mean shit.

  42. John on March 9, 2010:

I was there today. It looked good, good luck. I bet they get more business because of you. I didn’t know about the place till I heard about it from you.

  43. Sam on April 9, 2010:

Your red owl – I have the same one in green that I picked up at a yard sale. Do you know if it’s meant to have candles in it, that’s why there’s the holes? Just a thought… I love your red owl! And I love your blog!

  44. Lis on April 13, 2010:

If either of the kilim’s are still kicking around and you’d be willing to ship to the bay area I love them and would like to know how much you’re asking (I know, the reason you stopped Etsy the shipping, but I’m willing to give it a shot!)
    Love TBH!
