Bookends

May 6th, 2009

In the search for the perfect pair of bookends I have decided that I love only two.

Ben Seibel Jenfred-ware bookends

George Nelson Jax / Jack bookends

The Nelson is a classic, but man all those Ben Seibel Jenfred bookends are sexxxx-y. These both pop-up on Ebay and Etsy, but can get quite pricey very quickly. The hope is that I stumble upon them somewhere unexpected and my wildest fantasies about keeping my books straight in style come true.

The Jenfred ones ARE sexy, plus they would come in real handy in case of an intruder.

Hope you find a pair in some out-of-the-way shop for, like, two bucks!

I found a pair of Ben Seibel “Handles” at a thrift store for about $8, and I love them.

I’m jealous of your new bench, so maybe we could just trade :)

Yup, I found a pair of Seibel bookends at a secondhand shop for $12. Just keep your eyes peeled, you’ll find a set eventually. See, you would immediately recognize them for what they were, and not let someone else scoop them up. (!) Sigh … thrift fail.

The jacks bookends were designed/made by Bill Curry for DesignLine in El Segundo, CA. I worked in his factory in the early 70s. He should get credit for his designs. He also designed amazing lighting, two of which are the Stemlite and Luvlite. Bill died young from a brain blood clot and somehow George Nelson keeps getting credited for the jacks. Bill use to have two large "jack" tables with round glass tops in his living room. Wish I had those but I don't think he ever mass produced them.
